The Ruhr area is the biggest German megalopolis, a conglomerate of several intertwining major cities, with more than 5.3 million inhabitants. For this region IVU Umwelt has identified the hot spots by a combination of measurements and modelling on behalf of the State Environmental Agency of North Rhine-Westphalia.
A road network of more than 3000 km in length and with over 8000 inhabited sections was investigated with IMMISluft in order to identify road sections with possibly affected inhabitants. The concentrations are displayed in pollution maps with colors from green, over yellow to red which results in so called "Traffic Light Maps".
The software IMMISmt is used to determine current concentration values based on real-time traffic and meteorological data within the research project "iQ Mobility - Integrated Quality and Mobility Management for Road Traffic in the Berlin Region".
Currently, analysis of an in situ test at Leipziger Straße is in progress.

Specifically, we would like to point out that the user interface is completely revised, new database fields for particles were introduced and the number of database fields is now variable.
The team of IVU Umwelt wishes a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

The 1000 pages report "Environmental protection in the shadow of climate change" is an overall assessment of German and EU environment policies. The statements in Chapter 4 - Clean Air - are based amongst others on two reports, worked out by IVU Umwelt, commissioned by the German Federal Environmental Agency (UBA):
Diegmann, V., Pfäfflin, F., Wursthorn, H. (2007a): Updated inventory of Clean Air Plans and Action Plans in Germany. Final report. Freiburg: IVU Umwelt GmbH.
Diegmann, V., Pfäfflin, F., Wiegand, G., Wursthorn, H., Dünnebeil, F., Helms, H., Lambrecht, U. (2007b): Measures to reduce particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide. Dessau: German Federal Environmental Agency (UBA). UBA-Texte 22/07.
The German Advisory Council on the Environment (SRU), established in 1971, is an expert advisory body whose mission is to describe and assess the current environmental situation and current environmental trends, as well as to point out environmental problems and suggest possible ways and means of preventing or correcting them.
IVU Umwelt presented a poster on this topic at the VDI colloquium, June 24 and 25, 2008 in Nuremberg, Germany.
The colloquium "New developments in measurement and evaluation of air qualitity" for experts in economics, science and administration is organized by the VDI Knowledge Forum, governed by the "Commission on Air Pollution Prevention of VDI and DIN - Standards Committee".
