  1. Environmental Traffic Management with IMMISmt in Potsdam, Germany ...

The main idea of the Environmental Traffic Management in Potsdam is to reduce peak pollutant concentrations by temporarily activating measures to influence the traffic during episodes of high concentration levels. IMMISmt, a software product of IVU Umwelt is used in Potsdam as an extension to the traffic management system to determine current concentrations in hot spots in near real-time, thus leading to an optimised environmental traffic management. If defined pollution levels are reached, IMMISmt can issue warnings or initiate traffic control measures. The effect of the applied control measures on the entire road network can subsequently be monitored with IMMISmt.

Potsdam, the capital city of the German federal state of Brandenburg, is part of the Berlin/Brandenburg Metropolitan Region. Since April 2012 the Environmental Traffic Management is in operation. The aim of this operational system, which is currently unique in Germany, is to improve air quality and reduce exceedances of PM10- and NO2-limit values in Potsdam.

  2. Annual Air Quality Report of Frankfurt Airport 2011 ...

The results and maps of air quality modelling in preparation of the expansion of Frankfurt Airport, created by IVU Umwelt, are again presented and commented in the current Air Quality report by Fraport AG, the operator of Frankfurt Airport. The report emphasizes the good accordance of modelled results and measured values for NO2, especially in areas with higher concentrations.

In the original expertises, annual mean values for different pollutants, e. g. nitrogen oxides and PM10, emitted both by the airport and the surrounding region, had been modelled in order to assess the impact of the airport expansion on air quality.

  3. 4th Workshop on "Air Quality and modelling" in Freiburg from 15 to 16 May 2012 ...

Our 4th Workshop "Air Quality and modelling" took place in Freiburg on May, 15 - 16 2012. Thanks to the interesting presentations and intensive discussions in the audience, this workshop was a successful event.

The presentations covered a wide spectrum of new developments in Air Quality planning and modelling with talks on e. g.:

    • experiences with the Handbook Emission Factors for Road Transport (HBEFA)
    • effects of speed limits of 30 km/h on air quality
    • results of an Environmental oriented Traffic Management
    • quantification of health effects of PM2.5 and NO2

  5. Version 5 of IMMISem / IMMISair available ...

Version 5 of IMMISem/air, the model for road traffic emissions and air quality screening, now features an English user interface. Emission calculation is based on and in accordance with the current European Handbook for Emission factors (HBEFA 3.1). Major adjustments where necessary in IMMISem in order to reflect the new concept for the traffic situations. A model for calculating levels of service (LOS) has been implemented to replaces the old Stop&Go-model. Due to the new traffic situation scheme, the emission factors for PM10 and PM2.5 also had to be revised.

Additionally, IMMISair was extended by new methods to determine NO2 annual mean values with two new approaches, taking into account the direct NO2 emissions and a simplified photochemistry.

  6. Particle Reduction Strategies: Final Report presented ...

Within the project PAREST (Particle Reduction Strategies) the software FLADIS of IVU Umwelt was used to visualize the results, to compare the spatial and temporal effects and to analyze them.

PAREST is a R&D project assigned by the German Federal Environmental Agency. In the project PAREST emission reference scenarios until 2020 were constructed for fine particles (PM10 und PM2.5) as well as for the aerosol precursors SO2, NOX, NH3 and NMVOC, both for Germany and Europe. These emission reference scenarios include the current legislation measures as well as additional abatement measures, which go beyond current legislation. With a Chemical transport model (CTM) the emission abatement potential of these measures for germany was analyzed and evaluated.
